Major rock fall at Halls Horbour?

Postby szymiec » Thu Dec 29, 2005 10:38 am

Hello All,

We were out ice climbing at Halls Harbour on 2 seperate occasions this holiday. The first was the 24th which brought some excellent conditions in my novice opinion and yesterday, which after a few runs, rained down a soccer ball sized rock 10 feet to my left as i was tying in to a top belay.
See chris scurry.

Yesterday we noticed a huge rock fall about 100 M down the beach of the little gully we were climbing. I am talking about a pile of rubble the size of a 3 story apartment building. Trees, dirt and everything else you can imagine. All looking very fresh and very very scary.

On the 24th -me and my partner Rich have aggreed- it was not there.

This is about 800 M SW of the Lobster Pound. This is the only photo of the fall.

Thanks to Anne for the photos.

Thoughts?

There has always been alot of rock and ice fall around there. The colder the conditions the safer it is. Sooooo... How was the ice?

There was only a narrow smear of ice - even though it was quite warm the ice was brittle but got softer and thicker towards the top. Once we both had climbed three times though - the bottom was almost non existent - you had to really high-step to get onto the ice. There was only one line formed yesterday! And as Chris said already - the rock around it was thawing and it really started to be dangerous by 1.30 pm. However, nice and soft ice at the top. One week of cold and it will be great!!!

Cool thanks for the report. Hopefully we will all get out on the ice soon.

I go out for 2 weeks in Feb, then in the spring up north to baffin. But I am pretty much around for the next while. How about you been doing any training?
