I just have an original copy that I have done with a photocopier and then print covers on glossy cardstock and then cut and coil. I can show you a copy sometime. I have Kwik Koppy do the work here in Fredericton. It costs a fortune and I make little profit. The last batch cost $13/book and I sold them to Irving for $15/book. A big old two bucks in my pocket.

so I'm definitely interested in talking real publishing for the next edition. I'm hoping to work on it this winter.

How many pages is the book and what are they printing it on (is it 11x17 cut into 8 1/2 by 11 and folded?). Normally black and white cost per page is under a penny- .89 cents per page and color can on average be 8.9 cents per page (one side)- this is what they pay to make their machine run that, then of course they add make ready and proofing fees, have you gotten other quotes around town and who does the binding (coil is good for climbers because it lays flat) If I were you I would check out different quotes because there is no black and white in pricing, take it too at least a few different places for a fair average and usually you can go back to the place printing it and say (so and so will print it for this) Digital is definately less expensice for short runs (under 500) which I assume you are doing.

what is digital? you mean photocopies.

What I have is an original copy (uncut) of a word file printed double sided on 8.5x11 which folds into a booklet. They cut a 1/4" all around then cut down the middle. Slap a cover on and coil. I'm pretty sure I'm paying more like 10cents per copy or something like that. The photocopies is what's killing me in the cost it seems. It's only black and white. 50 pages or so per book

any ideas

For the next edition I'm looking to use adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator. Then make a PDF and send it off to a publishing place. Will probably be cheaper that way.

It does definately seem a little expensive to me as to what they are charging. Some print shops do have issues with working in word. PDF adobe is a preferred format. You mentioned that the pages are 8 1/2 by 11 then folded so you should be paying a full page for only a half of 8 1/2 by 11. For the coil binding they must do the hole punching too. why don't you go to them and aks them to do it for lower $10-a book, they know what their break even point is and we don't and the worst they'll say is no, but at least you'll have tried to get it for less. Have you tried getting some advertisments in it as well- for example call Boston pizza and if they will allow you to put a discount coupon for them in the book and they pay 50 cents per book for the advertising (or less as it usually is)- any companies that are involved getting them to advertise in it. - Sometimes the printing company will agree to an advertisment. If your going to do this they will want to know who the demographic is that your marketing to and what the message is Is this information helping? I hope I'm being of some help idea wise.

Fred plans on releasing the new edition.. a 'climbing in New Brunswick' book in the spring. just in time for rock.

Guidebook update.

The new guidebook is coming along nicely. All of the route descriptions are complete, routes are numbered, 80% of topos are complete.

There are 426 routes in the next edition.

scheduled to be released in Spring 2007.
