Kilimanjaro next June

Postby mike » Mon Oct 24, 2005 7:46 am

I'm in Nigeria right now and feeling like Kilimanjaro needs a visit. The plan is to head to Pt. Lenana, right next to Mt. Kenya, for some acclimatization (therefore cost reduction on Kili- daily fees are expensive), an overnighter in Sweetwaters game reserve, then a drive to Kili for an ascent of the Western Breach Route.

Anyone got the Kili bug? I hear lots of people have it on their to do list...maybe you'd like to come along...

Let me know,

Mike

Yeah- 2 weeks is just about the right amount.

It's not a technical climb- I understand crampons are helpful near the top and there's a fun peak to climb on the way. Something tower- I can't remember- easy rock.

Cheers,
Mike

This is like mountaineering 101. Aparently Kili is the most likely mountain to sport (whoops- I meant spot) a supermodel on. It's super easy in an astonishingly beautiful environment.

Crampons were not necessary when I was there. I think you'd have more fun doing an ascent of Mt. Kenya proper.

Takes 5 days to climb via the Coca-cola route. Less days is possible, if your head doesn't explode. One day on either side for transportation from Nairobi to Arusha (That's 7 days). 3 days total for traveling to and from Canada. So you should be able to get there, up, and back in 10 days Steve, but if you had more you should definately do a Safari.

But, I will repeat...screw Kilimanjaro and do Mt. Kenya. :D

I hear the Western Breasch is kinda nice. A fairly straight up, straight down kinda route.

As for Mt. Kenya. I agree, however, there's a bit of been there, done that going on. I've done the starndard route already. Climbed a 5.9ish type route on Pt. John as well. I've got a mountian virgin friend who wants to climb Kili. I said I'd help out.

I'm heading back to Shkhara once I'm done there. It'll be good for acclimatization and training.

Good advice on Kenya though- it's a really nice, varied and sometimes exceptionally exposed route.

Cheers,
Mike

Kili in Jume.

That girl certainly is an inspiration. The climbing is one thing- a big thing. The logistics is a whole different ball of wax. The planning and confidence involved such an endeavor is incredible.

Thanks for the link.

Kili

I saw she had been there before, and figured she could give you a few "technical pointers". Can't say what her logistical skills are, but not everyone can be an "all-rounder", eh?
