Not from climbing though...

From what I've heard he left his rope out for a few nights then went rope jumping with it.
The rope snapped and he died on impact

actually,

he was doing a 2000ft jump with a system made up with climbing ropes and pulleys in Yosemite of the (Leaning Tower?). The rope got snagged in one of the mechanisms and got sliced so he decked

so yes I think doing 2000ft jumps on dynamic climbing ropes constitutes defying death

Yeah it was pretty crazy you can see his jumps in Masters of Stone 5. Actually at the gym here they just brought out a bunch of old climbing magazines and one has a tribute to him in it.

He had done so many crazy things, it was bound to happen at some point.

Is that the offical report of what happened to his gear, cause the article and everything else I have read always seem to be after he died but before the final analysis.

as far as I know his rope got snagged in his system and sliced

He kept the rope in a bundle and as he jumped the thing fed through some sort of pulley system. That's where it jammed.

as far as I've heard anyways

He had done the same jump 3 weeks before. The entire system was left on location. 3 weeks later when he went to dismantle it he went for it one last time. In an interview just before his death he admited he was going to far and was going to stop since he had an 8 year old dauther at the time. They expect the rope failled due to the exposure to uv. The systmem did not chop his rope. It failled at the tie in point.

But what an awesome video. The guy was larger than life.

An article that appeared in Climbing magizine shortly after his death stated the ropes had been hanging on site for 16 days. It was a 900 to 1000 foot jump. He had a static retrieval line on his dynamic jump rope ( a number of climbing ropes tied together). The static line was attached to the jump line with a pulley. On his last jump he got tangled in the retrieval line and instead of the entire dynamic rope absorbing the fall only a portion of it and a portion of the static rope attempted to catch the jump thus making the fall factor much higher than anticipated.

so then something did get snagged in a pulley of some sort?

because I had heard that UV was not a factor in the failure

Regardless.... Sick sick sick. I don't think I could walk that fast if it were horizontal. And the dyno, Holy crap that guy has big brass kahones, ula. What a cool looking route though. I'd love to give that a go.

I'll bet the camera men probably all had several heart attacks filming that one. Heck, I just about had one watching it.

In the actual masters of stone video it shows him almost missing a hold. Now that would cause a heart attack.

Have ever seen the one where he solo's the 60ft (running) waterfall during spring melt in tahoe with ice tools. He duct taped his boots so they wouldn't fill up with water, wore a diving mask and said the hardest thing about the about the whole ascent was dealing with the pain from the continuous ice cream headache he had. Or the one where he takes the hundred foot whipper pulling like six pieces of gear. Most people looked and still look at that guy like he was a total looney, But he actually was really calculated in what he did he just worked at a level that most people consider, reckless. I mean nowadays people have kayaked 100ft waterfalls, strapped carbon fibre wings to their back and flown across the english channel at over 200km/h, and have skied off 1000ft cliffs with parachutes on there backs. Dan Osman, I think was just ahead of his time a genuine Maverick and in my opinion has pushed limits to a level where others may ever dare go again. He made a mistake and he paid for it, but I think it's wrong to judge what he did when in reality he had done hundreds of rope jumps in his lifetime working up to the jumps he did on leaning tower. Basically he shoudln't have jumped on that system, and if anyone was more competent to assess that it would have been him, however if he was in a competent frame of mind at the time, I guess we don't know. Regardless he did some reallly cool S$%. And I'd recommend reading the book.
