This years Rock School will be held Sept 24/25 in welsford. A meeting will be held Wednesday Sept 21 at 7pm at the UNB wall for more details. All are welcome

Why isn't rock school offered in MAY?

The reason I ask is because say someone attends rock school in late september... then they want to climb more outdoors... now they have like 1 month left to climb before they need to learn how to Ice Climb a few months later.

If the school was offered in May or additionally in May, those newbies would have the whole season to continue climbing.

Thoughts? Answers? or am I just gonna get flamed by the usual Freddy crowd??

Well, you members to have a club. So september and januaray are usually the best times to get them. They prolly want to be to people exposed to climbing and the gym so they have people in the gym all winter.

Plus May is exam time and that's probably the worst time to try and organize something like that.

Students really only have ambition at the begining of the year.

May is bad for three reasons.

1. It's buggy
2. It's exams or people are moving back home
3. Like dcentral said, the students aren't motivated by then

We tried offering anchors courses around that time and had only one person show up.

Yup, the biggest problem is that most of our volunteers are students and they take off at the end of april for their summer jobs etc. No one is around to help teach 40 people to climb etc. And all of the regulars who live in Fredericton already help out with so many other things that when the weather gets good, they want to climb for themselves not teach a bunch of newbs.

Rock School is the same every year. 40$ to attend, that includes equipment and a ride from UNB. you must supply camping gear and food/water.

We take about 40 people out to Bald peak, teach them the basics and let them climb under supervision all day on Saturday. Then we camp in Welsford (farmers field) and climb the following day at Cochrane lane all day. Again, under supervision. We set up about 6 or 7 classic routes for everyone to try so they get a taste of what welsford has to offer.

Hey John,

thanks for a smooth running rock school! It is a lot of work to get it all organized and make it happen, but well worth the effort!!

everyone had a great time and hopefully we hooked a few more newbs into it all!
