Bridgetown

Postby Fred » Sun Aug 07, 2005 7:14 pm

We just spent the day in Bridgetown NS at a new area that Derick Smith found near their new house. Zig will likely have an update on his website shortly but lets just say we were quite impressed. There is lots of potential but no room for laziness since a lot of scrubbing is required. Just to give you an idea, Zig even said "there's more boulders here than TB woods... there's gota be about 100+ problems to develop". The boulders are concentrated too. I'm probably playing it up a little but it's not far from the truth.

Stay tunned for more details.

One problem in particular on "The Monument" boulder is a perfect 20ft high overhanging prow. Scarry and highball but will go if someone has big boys in their pants.
I want to go to hell... there's probably lots of rock to climb there.

Well thats good news! I live about 30 mins from Bridgetown, and I'd be willing to help out... I'd love to help develop a local area so just let me know.

Although Derick and Sarah got permission to go on this Gentlemans land and have invited a few of their friends down to help check it out, they don't want a ton of people flooding the area until he asks further permisson to Blaze a trail and a few other details. Just to keep relations on good grounds with the owner.

Derick is stoked to get the place available to everyone but is working on how right now.

we'll keep you posted.

but yeah, the place is super concentrated and has tons of Huge highballs and lots of other medium sized boulders, overhangs, slabs, crimpers, flakes etc.

And LOTS AND LOTS OF LICHEN AND MOSS. tons of work to do, but will be well worth it!!!

Sounds like CNS should be involved if there is an access issue.

There is no access issue.

but in order to avoid one, it is likely best for Derick to get to know the land owner a little better before announcing to all of NS boulderers to come on down and clean/send.

That is all I was trying to say.

There's no reason why Derick can't work with CNS thought.

Of course. and I am on the board and I have been to the area with derick and have informed him of CNS' ability to help out if he needs it etc.

Again, he has only been to the area 3 times and the land owner said have fun. but he wants to talk to him again and ask about a few other things.

if I were the land owner I'd be pissed if I said, yes to one small group...4 or 5 people and then all of a sudden had 20 people regularily showing up etc.

good relations are key.

Patience. I don't see the hurry.

that photo was edited in Photoshop last night so in fact it's actually bigger and looks better than it really is. and same goes for all the hype. there's no holds on these dirty boulders. sorry to disappoint you. might as well just stay put in Hali. for now

that post is confusing! I meant the boulder is friggin small and crappy compared to what it looks on the photo. same goes for all the other ones.

That wasn't a slight on the people who are invovled with CNS. It's a tough job.

Almost any volunteer organization is slow, its just the nature of the beast.

Anyways it doesn't really matter. This thread is quickly going down hill.

Derrick just moved to the area, give it time. I think the owner would be overwhelmed if he started talking about CNS right away. Its better to let it evolve over time.

While CNS is ready to help with negotiations if necessary, it is always better to work through locals. It is better for the landowner’s neighbour to tell him/her about climbing and to ask if climbers can come and climb on the boulders, rather than have an organisation based in far away Halifax suddenly asking for access to their land.

Generally speaking people tend to be happier dealing with someone they know when considering a request, and happier dealing with an organization when they have a complaint. We will let Derick and Sarah explain to the landowner what Climb Nova Scotia is all about so that when CNS does make official contact we do not receive a paranoid or negative response. I assume Carra can provide Derick and Sarah with any information they need to pass along.

I think it is worth taking the time to do things right, rather than risk losing out because we want access a few months earlier.

That is exactly it Teth. I have already filled Sarah and Derick in on everything they need to know from CNS. and that is what I was trying to stress to everyone that seemed in a hurry...to let things take their course and let Derick and Sarah deal with the land owner and develop a relationship with him etc.

rhumor is that they found another equal amount of boulders just yards away all concentrated and huge. That's 200 potential problems in one condensed area. Crazy!

patience. It will all be worth the wait.

Derick is talking to the land owner and feeling him out. It seems he has no problems with people visiting but baby steps is probably the best way to approach it.
