Cochrane Lane Classics Challenge

Postby PeterA » Mon Aug 12, 2013 8:12 pm

When: Saturday August 24th

Where: Cochrane Lane

What: An 8 hour challenge to climb as many of the thumbs upped routes in the new guidebook as you can. The idea started when Jon A. and I were thinking of fun challenges to run, and we figured that it would be a lot of fun if a lot of people joined in.

rules: 1. no soloing
2. no simul climbing
3. Routes must be climbed safely to your ability
4. Time starts when you leave the ground for your first route. You then have 8 hours to climb as many routes as you can.
5. Minimum teams of two, maximum of however many you want
6. Record your results in the sign in box at the end of your 8 hours

why: For the fun of it :)

-Every member has to send every route right?
-Is it 3 points per 3 star route, 2 points per 2 star, etc. ?

I'm definitely in and encourage everyone to participate!

Austin Conrad and Adam Thimot and I were thinking of doing a "as many routes as possible" challenge just a couple of weeks ago actually, kinda weird that you thought of it too.

Anyway we'll be participating since we had planned on doing this anyway! Teams of two would be best though... we'll need a 4th if anyones interested.

Assuming time tracking is going to simply be the honour system, it seems like it would make more sense to say "do the challenge on whatever day you want", so a standing challenge a-la the record on the Nose.

The official challenge will be one day only. I don't see crowding being an issue. If you're in my way I'll just French-free your gear loops.

Honestly it would just be fun to have a few groups out there at the same time. Maybea little friendly banter as we pass on the trail kind of thing
I just want to climb.

I think this is a sweet idea. Probability suggests that I won't be able to do it on that particular day... but this is something I want to do at the next possible opportunity.

Teams should post their 8 hour point count here as well as in the book.

Also, I think climbing in a team of 3 should net more points if they're able to crank off the pitches despite the disadvantage.

How about this formula:

Points = Sum(#persons x #thumbsup)

Welsford and crowded is like progressive and conservative - it doesn't make sense to use them in the same sentence...

I also prefer doing it on Saturday the 24th only.
Not sure I like the open number of party members. I think 2 (or 3) should be the max...I'm not making the rules though...just my own suggestions .Good call on this idea Adamsons

I think the best way to approah this would be to have the one day event but also open it up for others to beat whatever the record is set that day. This way anyone who can't make it that day (me included) can have a chance to give it a shot at a later date but of course nothing is going to stop you from doing that anyways. I also feel it would be best if the party size is open however there should be a rule that all members have to climb each route. I'm open as to wether or not they must all lead the climbs.

Good idea btw :D

The problem with this formula is if you have a group of 10 for instance, then you climb It`s a Way of Life and Snakepeel and you get 60 points. [(10 x 3) x 2]

A group of 2 will have to climb 10 routes to get the same amount of points and will necessarily need to hike more and climb harder routes as easy 3 star routes are limited.

This is why I'm advocating for a 2 person party only. Also, that way it's more consistent. 2 climbers per across the board.

Ok.

1) It's not my challenge. So if PJ/Jon say party size isn't a factor, that's good with me.
2) If you set up Snakepeel in a party of 10 on a competition day Dom, you get a punch in the chockstones!

Again... awesome idea... and it should be an ongoing challenge!

Why are climbers so opinionated? Do mountain bikers say to the organizers of the Hadley Challenge..."Hey I can't make it that day so let me ride it the day before and have it count" or "I don't like that section of trail...why not do this trail instead". Do runners say "I can't make the marathon by the sea...let me run it the next day instead".

Fun idea Jon and Peter. You came up with the idea so you make the rules and we abide by them or we make up our own challenge is my line of thinking.

Good idea PJ and Jon! Fun way to motivate people to get out and also have them flip through the new guidebook looking for stars. Kristen and I are planning to rope up and crank out what pitches we can between her photographer duties. Here's hoping for good weather and a good turnout.

hahaha ya climbers are opinionated  I think the difference between this challange and say a marathon is that this is not a formally organized event where we need to have event staff monitor climbing parties and ensure no one cheats and everyone follows the rules. This challange is based on an honour system and therefore it can happen on any day. I see it as more of a standing challange like say the speed ascent of the nose (although less epic of course). It's should be something that remains open. I'm not trying to impose my rules on others but simply suggesting ways that I think it could be made better and others will either agree or disagree and that is what this thread is for :D Utimately its up to PJ though since he came up with the idea.

I just realized I'm going to be in PEI that weekend so I'll attempt the challenge the weekend after just for shits and giggles. I may or may not also write my score in the sign-in book to compare against you Aug24'ers.

Obviously more of a statement rather than a question...like your as well. :)

Looks like it will be wet on Sat with heavy rain/thunderstorms on Fri. Double points for a wet ascent?

If changing to Sunday...I can only make it out there for late afternoon. Can I split my 8 hours into 4 hour blocks on separate days and have it count?

Nice pics Steve!

So I guess two competitions happened that day
1. Climb the most routes with thumbs up. 1 route = 1 "point" regardless of the amount of thumbs up
2. Climb the most routes with thumbs up. 3 thumbs route = 3 points, 2 thumbs routes = 2 points, etc.

Obviously, a different strategy would be used based on which competition you interpreted. Comparing both would be like comparing apples and oranges.
Cory Goodman and I did the 2nd one. Every route was led and seconded clean. Our total is 46 thumbs up in a total of 7h57.

Here is our ticklist:

-Reindeerland 5.5 2 thumbs
-Gollum's Cave 5.6 3 thumbs
-Leviathan 5.11 3 thumbs
-A warm and Sultry Evening 5.9 3 thumbs
-The Smoking Crack 5.8 3 thumbs
-Curried Recollection 5.9 2 thumbs
-Salt N Pepper 5.7 3 thumbs
-5.8 for Style 5.8 3 thumbs
-Spiderman 5.8 2 thumbs
-Tut's Tomb 5.9 2 thumbs
-Sticky Fingers 5.10 3 thumbs
-Mammalian Protuberances 5.7 3 thumbs
-Snakepeel 5.7 3 thumbs
-It's a Way of Life 5.4 3 thumbs
-The Waltz 5.10 3 thumbs
-Monsieur Torpedo 5.9 3 thumbs
-The Town Bicycle 5.10 2 thumbs

What a fun day!! let's do something of this nature at Sunnyside this Fall

Although our score is unofficial, I thought I'd mention that Sonia and I climbed the 8-hour challenge Sunday. Great idea for sure. We traded leads and got in 14 pitches in 7h 45m. Better that either of us had expected. Thanks for throwing down the challenge Adamsons.

A great way to rate your day is by allowing point by the decimal.
5.8=8 points
5.10=10 points

Letter in that system are not worth anything.
