cleaning ice gear

Postby Stacey » Thu Mar 28, 2013 12:02 pm

With ice season drawing to a close...I want to de-rust my crampons, etc. before putting them away for a few months. I always let them dry, but I still have some rust on the tips, etc. I'm an amateur at the cleaning/drying part of climbing :S

What's the best way to 'clean' them for summer storage? Steel wool?

Thanks

Stacey,
You can file as you see fit and a bit of steel wool will make them cosmetically look nice. Finish the job with a light wipe-down using a rag that's had some WD-40 (or similar) applied to it. Avoid any nylon bits of course. This will greatly help any gear you've got made of carbon steel (like front points, hangars, and picks). Probably not as essential on the stainless steel parts (like screw teeth). Cheers.
