Climbable rock this week?

Postby (brad) foster » Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:48 pm

Hi there! I'm new!

I'm visiting home (Rothesay) for the next week and I'm wondering if any crags will be accessible and climbable?
I haven't climbed in NB since about 2004, so I have no idea what is suitable for winter rock climbing - so any advice would be hugely appreciated :)

Thanks!

Bradley.

On a warm enough winter day you might sneak in some climbs at Cedar Point in Saint John, a sport crag on quarried limestone. Cochrane Lane cliffs in Welsford is the major destination but has limited sport climbs available. The Gollum's Cave area is usually the driest. You might also find sunshine, dry stone, and sport routes at Sunnyside in Welsford. Sunnyside might be harder to follow a trail in winter.

You can get a copy of the guidebook at Scout Shop in Saint John or Radical Edge in Fredericton. There is also info online at Mountain Project and http://www.beta-source.com

Good luck.
I want to go to hell... there's probably lots of rock to climb there.

Despite being NB's worst crag IMO as far as rock quality, your best bet for Winter climbing is in Hampton Marsh. It gets direct sun (Southern facing), has no approach and is almost always dry. lunchbox and physical Graffiti are nice routes. good luck!
