tendon ropes use teflon in their two higher end rope treatments. They do not specify what might be in their standard treatment, which is all this rope has.

Also it should be noted that Teflon itself is non-toxic. The media had a hay day when a bird died in a kitchen where teflon coated cookware was being used. It is actually products resulting from the degradation of teflon at higher temperatures that are toxic, and birds are predisposed to dying when exposed to them.

So don't abseil too quickly with your tendon ropes near birds!

True, about the high temps and birds, but also the water and cows around the DuPont plant where it is/was made in the US.

So as I flaked the rope out for the first time I found that the manufacturer's center mark was super stiff and hard. I tried bending the rope at the mark and it made crackling noises, and is still very stiff and hard. I showed the rope around and only one person had seen this before. Apparently a friend of his had a rope with a stiff center mark and he just dealt with it.

Anyone have an opinion? I have a hard time trusting a rope with one spot that seems to have different properties then the rest. I e-mailed Tendon and got this response:

Hi

If you used only your hands , I think, that rope should be OK.
I must try this and test result.
I will send you result as soon as possible.
We know about this issue at this time we change the type of color

Anyone guess what he's getting at when he says the rope should be OK if I only used my hands? What does he think I used to flake the rope? Here is the e-mail I had sent Tendon:

I just bought a Tendon Smart Climbing rope. When I flaked it out for the first time I noticed that it was very hard at the center point mark. When I tried bending the rope it made crackling noises and remains much stiffer then the rest of the rope. This does not seem normal, and I am concerned that the integrity of the rope has been compromised. Is this typical for your ropes? Should I be concerned?

Anyone have an opinion?

I picked up a couple of these ropes. I plan on leaving one in Cuba when I go in December. The one I have used so far also had a stiff section at the middle mark. I think it is only the sheath tho, so I'm not worried about the core. It does make it a little hard to get thru a grigri tho... i'll let you know how they feel after a few more pitches. I'm only using mine for aid climbing tho so have not even taken a fall on it. Hopefully I won't either!

Thanks Adam, it's nice to know that the rope I got wasn't a special case. I still haven't been out on it, but it is no longer wet so it might be time I pulled it out and gave it a shot.
