storing your climbing gear

Has anyone came across any literature w.r.t. storing your climbing gear in the garage? By that I mean hanging it on a designated shelf and hooks not tossing it on the floor.

Over the years from multiple sources (sorry can't cite any off-hand) there's been talk about the trunk being pretty bad due to exhaust and god-knows-what chemicals have been spilled onto the carpet. Your garage door and somewhere in the ceiling/roof should vent most of the volatiles, provided you don't leave the engine running. I think the jerry can, lawnmower, paint thinnerin a mason jar, and other solvent vapours would be the bigger concern over time. How much time before damage is measurable, and how that relates to the typical lifespan of a rope is a good question.

Lot of closets...but DIRTY climbing gear says OUTSIDE and not carried through my NEW CLEAN house all the time. We'll keep it inside for the winter...

Just read in the literature that came with my new mammut rope to not hang your rope by a loop of itself. If you must hang it, hang by a separate loop of webbing. Suggests to store in a cool dark place.

Well, our garage is cool and dark. I wonder why not to hang it by its own loop? hmmm..

I'd prefer to keep ours in one of the old school MEC rope tarp Tacos that cinched up into a perfect circle. they don't make them any more. ours has been repaired a few times. not sure if it is still kicking around or not.
