Hey all. I know there probably have been lots of threads about this topic but here's another one.

I'm looking for route recommendations for Vegas (first week of march). Trad, sport, single pitch, multi-pitch.... whatever is fun and not epic.

Depends on what temps you'll get in March. I've been there twice in March, first time it was crazy warm, second time it was cold. Depending on the temps you'll want to chase the sun or the shade.....I've mostly climbed in the shade, which won't be of much use 'cause I'm thinking it's more likely to be cold at the start of March than at the end.

I enjoyed Birdland quite a bit. 4 or 5 pitches I think. A little crowded though, and the rappel is heinous. But the route itself is a lot of fun

Peter: what's the route in your Avatar photo?

I've seen photos of Birdland... Looks pretty cool. It's on my list. I thought it strange that it's a fairly popular route but was not in my older version of Swain guidebook. Must be a newer line. I'm also aiming for Crimson Chrysalis and Johnny Vegas with Solar Slabs if time permits. We want to get some sport in there too.

It looks a lot like Fear and Loathing III.

Regardless, F&L III is a fun steep route just past the Gallery.

Sunny and Steep is a great sport crag but kinda a long hike if you will have the kiddos.

yep its one of the fear and loathings. Just a little past the gallery. Johnny vegas is good, just make sure to get an early start, to avoid the crowds and give yourself as much time as possible on solar slabs.

Sunny and steep is an awesome crag with a whole bunch of really soft 11's and 12's (great for the ego ). On the approach, you go by atman and yin and yang, two amazingly splitter cracks. Just make sure you have a lot of triples/quatruples of cams for em they are a little hard to find, as they are on the backside of a boulder, so you can't see them from the trail. But the boulder they are on is almost right beside the trail.

It was pretty cold when we were there, so i only know sunny spots. I recall the gallery area was sunny, and sunny and steep was sunny (who woulda thunk it?).

Johnny vegas got shaded pretty quickly, but it was december so the sun was lower. Solar slabs was sunny though. Birdland had sun for most of the day. Thats about all I can remember

Long hike? No problem. Kids and wife will be staying home.

yes.. going shopping with the wife of his climbing partner in the US.... we'll be spending their fortunes. Breastfeeding is keeping me home from this trip. 10 days from my wee boy is too long at this point!


I recommend Prince of Darkness by the way. a fun way to spend an afternoon.

I know how to get to Atman and Yin Yang... we're good to go... that will make for a fun day.

Yesa! Was planning to mix that up with Sunny and Steep for a day maybe also Cannibal crag since there are only a few climbs to be had at each.

I'm stoked for this trip!!!!

Going to UNB today at 3pm to burn off some turkey.

Anything in the black velvet canyon! Refried Brains is probably my favorite! Go do Jubilent Song in windy canyon too it is awesome!
