West Coast Grand Manan Basalt Colums

Postby max » Wed Dec 17, 2008 3:59 pm

Just wondering if anyone has checked out the west coast of Grand Manan Island for rock climbing? I know it is the wrong season right now but saw some photos and it looks really sweet and they are the largest basalt sea cliffs in the northeast. Don't have my ice gear with me but I would like to get out or show people the Dorchester area, the ice will be forming with this cold weather!! hopefully it stays! Happy Holidays

Cheers,

Max

The climbing pics in this gallery are all in Grand Manan.

Although I have not actually been on much of the west coast of the island (most is boat access only) I can tell you that the basalt, although pretty, is choss. The geology is uniform across the entire western side (see map). There's probably some interesting bouldering on intact pieces and good ice. But I doubt you'd find a whole pitch of solid rock.
