Monday Night Bouldering Series, Week 8: Cheescake/Nouveau Ri

Postby SteveDave » Sat Jul 19, 2008 4:51 pm

Monday July the 21st we're heading back to the LoC (hopefully for real this time!) to visit the Great Cheesecake and Nouveau Riche sites! I've never been to either but I've heard good things about both. Once again, the LoC is usually wet and buggy so bring appropriate footwear and bug juice.

For those of us just becoming familiar with the Monday Night scene, we're basically a group of climbers who get together of our own accord and head to classic outdoor climbing areas around Halifax. It's a great way to become familiar with the outdoor spots and also to meet up with other climbers and old friends. We usually get between 15 and 25 people out, so you won't be the only stranger! If you've got climbing shoes or a bouldering pad, bring 'em, we carpool and there's always room for more gear and people.

We meet here BEFORE 6PM on Monday evenings:

And for directions to the areas, check this out. (all directions are from Zig's guide, "Halifax Bouldering")

LoC
The fastest way to reach LOC from Halifax is to take route 333. It will take you roughly a 1/2 hour. If you're coming from highway 102, follow signs for Peggy's Cove. In West Dover the road will take a very sharp right turn, there will then be two small two-car pull-outs on your left immediately after the baseball field.

The Great Cheesecake
There is a pullout with room for a few cars 3.2 kilometers from the ball diamond. It is just beside the entrance to Peggy's Cove. Park here, cross the street, cut right at the Tantallon sign towards the forest past a clearing. Find the trail that enters the forest. Follow the trail turning left a few seconds into it, continue along the left trail up a hill (boggy) for about 3 minutes until you are on a ridge with a large boulder on it. Stay right of the boulder and find a trail which leads to the next ridge. Go slightly right looking for evidence of an old quarry at the bottom of a slab. Go down the slab and cross the wet section on rocks. Continue on the trail for 20 seconds, looking for a split boulder.

Nouveau Riche
Same parking as The Great Cheesecake. From the first ridge go left along this ridge following a faint trail until it peters out. Continue in the same direction along the forest to the right. As the trail rises again look for a trail that goes up to the ridge to gain access to the upper ridge. The trail is about 5 minutes from the large boulder you started at.

Alright, that's pretty much it. One question, if anybody reads this far, where is the Borg boulder? It was on the original list but I've never heard of it and can't find any info online about it. Care to share?

Thanks guys, hope to see you out there!

Sweet. I think it's the grey blob at the beginning of the Peggy's Cove road. You'll see it.
