Red Rock Accommodations

For those who have been to Red Rocks, how hard is it to drive from Las Vegas to the climbing areas? There are some good deals on hotels but I don't want to spend hours in a vehicle each day.

Any recommendations for campsites, or is it still just the one campground?

Any tips about the area welcome!

When the group of us went in March we camped in the only campground that is close to Calico Basin and the scenic loop road. There are many hotels/motels on the main road (West Charleston Blvd/#159) about 10 minutes from the camping area. Keep in mind West Charleston Blvd turns into #159 and all of the climbing and camping is right off this road. While on West Charleston you can get anything you want... from gear to hotels to food. The main climbing areas are only 10-20 mintues from the camp ground. While in this area you're about 45 mins from the zoo of insanity.

If you haven't been there before just go to google maps and type calico basin, nv... camping is baiscally 20 secs up the road and on the opposite side. There is climbing in calico basin and the main areas are super close.

We are planning another trip this spring... one week in Red Rocks anb one week at Indian Creek. If you drive to Boston to catch your flight it is much cheaper.

It is exactly 18miles to downtown center from redrocks. I found hotels for $12.95 a night, those were skanky a decent one was $30-40 a night.

If you camp you are accorss the street from the climbing as burley said, but beware I had muy tent stolen out of the camp group by a crack whore and her son....seriously, I caught them later and got it back. But that only happened once out of the times I stayed there.

When you looking to go Steve? We didn't camp. Hotels were cheap enough and didn't have to haul all our camping gear. One year we stayed at the stratosphere for $19/night. Arizona Charlies Decataur Blvd is the closest casino hotel...which is where you'll find the cheapest rate hotel. It is half way out Charleston Blvd from the strip. There are hotels in Summerlin but anytime i checked they were expensive. From the strip to the gate i'd guess 20-30mins depending on traffic. Then it depends on where you are going to climb. Prob 15-20 min drive around the loop road. Black Velvet Canyon is prob another 30 min drive to the parking spot depending on what type of vehicle you have and whether you want to return your rental vehicle with the muffler still attached. The approaches can be 5 mins or an hour slog (or 2+ hours spent wandering around following paths through the desert). BVC will be starting to get chilly in a few weeks. Solar slab on the other hand will be primo. We also stayed at an extended stay hotel with a kitchen out on Boulder Hwy but it was prob another 10 minute drive past the strip. I think we paid $300 for the week there. I've got info on places. Cheapovegas.com is a good spot for stuff about the town.

We are leaving on Dec 24th and return on Jan 1st. The flight out of Saint John was $650. Out of Boston it was $480 but I did not think it was worth the difference with gas, hotel, food etc to get to Boston.

Hotels are about $35 per night, although that is at the Hooters hotel. I can get as low as $23 per night in some of the Casinos. How much was the campground?

Keep in mind that all hotels (even the skanky ones) really increase their prices on Friday and Saturday nights. So that $20/night hotel you find could be a $40-50 one on those nights.

I have always stayed at the 13-mile campground. $10/night per campsite, running water from spigots, pit toilets...not too impressive really for the price amounts American campgrounds, not bad compared to Canadian campgrounds. Its not a party campground (pretty quiet), but it is a place to meet other climbers if you're social.
