Minkey Wall question

Postby Andrew » Thu Jun 14, 2007 10:56 am

Does anyone know why it is called Minkey Wall? Do they mean Minke as in a type of Whale and maybe it is shaped like a Minke whale?

Curious mind wants to know :)

In fact, I would love to know the meaning and history behind all the different wall names and even some of the route names. Does anyone have that sort of information?

From Steve:

Minkey Wall was named after the Pink Panther movie where inspector clouseau says that there is a minkey in his room.

there is some history in the upcoming guidebook, but Fred, John and I know a lot of it second hand. for first hand.. Steve Adamson, Ghislain Losier, Karel Allard, Rob Lemmon etc etc. lots of variations on the same story too...

as we all know.. 3 sides to every story. :)

I'd like to see those climbers get together and write up somthing to post on Fred or Steve's website for us read about Welsford history and lore.

I'm a big fan of history of things I'm interested in.

It is much better to hear about it over a beer really.... then the stories get really colourful.

you need to camp out when a big crew does.

Names

Postby STeveA » Mon Jun 18, 2007 2:20 pm

The first climbers named a lot of their climbs by something they did or ate the night before. Later climbers named the routes based on something that the route inspired. Later themes started to develop for an area, for example Joe's garage Area climbs are named from the Frank Zappa album of that name. Pete and Steve's Most excellent Sport Climbing Wall area has climbs named from Bill and Ted's Most Excellent Adventure movie.

Love that Zappa theme.
