Ice Climbing - Weekend Feb 3-4

So, next weekend is coming into sight.

Saturday: the weather is good, but the tides are bad (on the Bay of Fundy), high tide just after mid-day.

Sunday: don't know the weather yet, and the tides are also bad (the same as Saturday, only one-half hour later).

I can't take Ben up on his offer to climb Friday, due to work, but perhaps someone else can. Or perhaps I could slip away early and climb in Bedrock after about 3:00 p.m. until sundown. Hmmm. Anyone else?

Weekend Day Trip options: either day, go to Gilbraltar (very small face, but can take three short ropes at a time); go to Deep Cover (much better ice, when it is formed, but if we all arrive and it is not formed, I don't know where we would go from there, perhaps to The Skapper?); Truro, Victoria Park (small ice fall at the top of the valley, can take one climber at a time); go to Fundy and try to climb the one or two routes that have a screen slope at the bottom, allowing one to rappel to the foot and receive a top-belay back up, while staying out of the water.

Hard(er) Core Options: go into Moose River overnight Saturday and Sunday, camping, but only if we have an excellent guide or route description, as I have never been in there, and only if we get together this week to co-ordinate community gear like stoves, food, etc., such as meeting at Henry House at 6:00 p.m., hint, hint. Or, instead, leave really early one of Saturday or Sunday, like five a.m. at the latest, and do a very long day trip to Parlee Brook, in New Brunswick, back the same night late. I would say a minimum of four committed, "for sure" climbers to make either of these options worthwhile and safe.

Finally, this shouldn't matter to a serious climber such as myself, cough, cough, but I do have a Super Bowl Party invite on Sunday, and others may be in the same situation. I would rather climb, but if people are indifferent to the day, I say climb Saturday. This wouldn't interfere with either of the Hard(er) Core options.

I know how to get into Moose River, there is also the Folly River, or some stuff around Tatamagouch. Other possibilities would be Harrington River, North River (Easy Access).

No real plans have been formed up for me on the weekend yet. By Thursday 6pm, after a drink or 2, I should have a better idea

I'm in for the weekend. I have a Super Bowl party to attend Sunday starting at 5, that is my only conflict. I am in for whatever as long as i am back by then. Day trip would be better than camping, for me anyway

Chris: Do you think we could do a day trip in to Moose River or Folly River, or the other areas you mentioned? That is, can we get in, climb for several hours, get out, and drive there and back, all in about ten to twelve hours? Peter

You can do a one day to Moose River. Ask Mitt. I think he has the approach programed into his GPS.

There are 3 main routes there. 2 of which require someone to lead and are 2 pitches in length. WI4 & WI5 i reckon.

The waterfall on the main river is top ropable and you can access it by a quick painful slog up through the trees. It's an easy WI3

There is also a really easy formation about 100M down stream on the right hand side. Its pretty small and believe it or not, the Quarry is far more interesting.

Saturday would work for me. Deep Cove is good fun, if it's "in."

I agree with Thom about tomorrow, and Conan is right about conditions at Deep Cove.

I suggest the following:

- meet at Steve-O-Renos at 8:30 on Sunday, instead of Saturday
- stop at the Main/Forest Hills Tim Horton's before 9:00 for others
- go to Gilbraltar Rock in the Musquodoboit: small but good practice.
- if there is no ice there, well, I have no Plan C, except drive to Truro

i'm out for sunday, except if i drag my 5 year old along. I checked out baxters cove today. its in but almost every line has a 10 foot drytool start. the rock there is kinda like trout cove. seems to have some bouldering and mixed climbing potential.
whats the land owners like there, seems like you have to rap off their lawns.

I'm in, I have no gear once again but it's on its way. Went to Moose River today to check it out. There was a foot of fresh snow, so any resonable approach requires 4X4, which was definately one of the highlights of the day, first tracks with the Jeep, lots of corners taken to fast. I left Halifax at 11:30 and am home at 7:30 no climbing. I walked the entire gorge from top to bottom on river right. All I have to say is WOW! The Big Stuff is Rockies big probably 100ft minimum. Found one spot that would be great for a outing, the big stuff is pretty serious. I'll bring my camera tommorow to show the goods, I'll meet at Tim's on Main.
