On Sunday Febuary 13th Ground Zero Climbing Gym hosted the 3rd Valentines Day Massacre Bouldering Competition. Particpants from all over the region were treated to an awsome display of power as 6 of the strongest climbers around slugged it out in a all day in what could only be described as some sick twisted version of SURVIVOR. In the preliminary round competitors were presented with a array of hard problems to solve and it became clear pretty quickly that bonus points for flashes were going to play a role in the outcome. With big guns Ben Blakney and Jon Bowles showing up the other climbers new something had to be done and alliances were soon formed. While the heavy hitters were strategizing the intermediate division was having a battle of its own. When the dust had settled and the preliminary round was over only 5 could go to the finals and much to everyones surprise Ben Blakney was eliminated. With the clock ticking down Mike "souldier of rock" Kohler squeaked in and we had our top five for the finals.1.Jon Bowles 2.Chris Richardson 3.Jonathan Grahm 4.Todd Foster 5.Mike Kohler
The finals consisted of 3 problems that had to be climbed A Vue(thats onsight for you non frech speakers) and climbers only had 6 mins to send each problem. Climbing in reverse order Mike Kohler came out and promptly HIKED problem 1. This was the begining of the flash fest that was the Mens open finals. Not showning any signs of fatigue from the preliminary round the mens finalists proceeded to destroy the finals problems. With the WBF belts hanging in the balance it became pretty obvious that nothing short of perfection would be required to take the victory. With every problem having been flashed by eveyryone it seemed that victory was all but certain for Jon Bowles but a bobble on problem 1 broke the flash streak and that was that. Having climbed hard all day in a seemingly invincible style a momentary loss of concetration was all it took for victory to slip away...
And so it was a surprised Chris Richardson who was presented with the 2005 WBF title. Jon Bowles took second by the narrowest of margins and 3rd went to former WBF champ Jon "Dr Wiggles" Graham.
The womens title went to Ellen Forham from New Brunswick. With only 3 women competitiors one has to wonder where are all the women climbers? Speical mention to Emily Robinson who as the only junior female climber got to duke it out with the big guns Ellen and Tonia Wong. Emily more than held her own and won the crowds hearts with her death defying heel hook on problem # 2 in the womens finals. Way to go Emily!!!!
The Mens Rec division was won by inmate #31459. Second place went to Daniel Boyce (who also took home the $50 dyno cash money yooooooooo!) and third went to Matt Grandy.
Huge thanks to Adam Benjamin who foreran and was pretty much second in command during the event and Kate Therien for choosing to not climb in order to help with logistics and scoring.
Special thanks to Teknik,Nice Industries and Etch holds for the sick new shapes. And big thanks to our local sponsors The Trail Shop and TAO.
