Climbing in the NWT next end of july or aug

Postby I climb little rocks » Tue Nov 02, 2004 12:11 am

Looking for people to come climbing in the N.W.T. next summer.
Would have to drive or fly to YYC, from there the best way is to drive
to Watson Lake and Charter a hour plane ride to Glacial Lake, just a
couple of kilometers from the towers. http://www.geocities.com/~gibell/cirque/
The dept date would range somewhere from the 15July to the 10aug.
The date is flexible as to what works for the majority
Lots of world class climbing and hiking, and as a bonus the Nahami
river runs near the area.
Another option is to fly to the Vampire Spires (15 miles NW) but I have limited climbing info at the present time ( I belive all the lines in the
area are mixed free and aid)
Once I have and idea of how many people are interested, I will
look into the cost of transportation...

P.S. I forgot to mention this is the location of Lotus Flower Tower, the
classic V 17p 5.10+ (lots of 5.7-9)
Bustle tower line Club International V 12p 5.11b featured in the American
alpine journal.
south ridge of Unicorn Peak III 5.9
and Mt. Proboscis

I think you would have a better chance of recuiting around here if you mentioned it hardly gets dark up there, leaving all day to laze around camp, smpke dope and still have time for a 25 minute bouldering session before calling it a nite.

August is probabally better for me

hahaha. good call john, I know a lot of climbers around here that just laze around camp and smoke dope. actually..I think a lot of climbers in general do that. too bad they didn't just climb more instead!

but...light most of the time...means no sketchy rappels in the dark!! woo hoo!

I might just consider a week in the area...but no more than that. hmm......

Hey John seem like most would prefer to leave around the 1st week
of Aug...I will contact Angus for the price on a float plane...should be
around 800-1000 $ pp from Watson Lake.
If things work out I should be in squamish at the end of May for 4-5 weeks leave my car out in YYC fly back to the Bugs for a week and then
drive up to Watson lake, spend 10-14 days there and drive back home

Will Meinen, Andy Gallant, Myself, you John if interested and possibly
some friends for YQT ( have not contacted them yet )

....Seems like a long distance to go just to smoke up or bum around camp

Fairey Meadows

Postby Rob L » Wed Dec 01, 2004 4:59 pm

I stayed at Fairey Meadows up in the Cirque. Glacier Lake is nice but buggy and we saw a few Grizzley which I am not overly into. No bugs or Griz in the Cirque proper. Bring some fishing stuff for Glacier Lake, it was ridiculously easy to catch fish, a nice break in the usual diet.

We were there the end of May and into June. Heaps of the snow up to the Lotus so we did some work on some other Towers until the very end when we made a run up the Lotus. Did the first four + pitches till we ran into a multi-pitch chimney system that was running with tons of water. End of trip.

More info on charter flights

Postby Ulysse » Thu Dec 02, 2004 7:15 pm

Hey got some more info on charters into the cirque for next summer
the price for otter (4 psgr max-float plane ) is 2782.00 cad tax in.
---this would mean a flight from Finlayson lake to Glacial lake and a
half day unhill slog to the spires
---the next option would be to fly from Finlayson lake directly to the
spires via both float plane and helicoper. 2 people would fly to the cirque
and shutle the other people from glacial lake via helicopter, it's expensive 6847.00 cad but no uphill slog required
on the return we would just have to hike downhill to the lake
So if we can only find 4 people the flight into glacial lake would be 695.00 cad pp and if 6 are interested the best option is to take the helicopter since we would have to charter the float plane twice ( at a cost
of 5564.00 cad) and the advantage of having the heli is that we would
fly directly into the cirque at a cost pp of 1147.00 cad pp (for 6)
Both methods of transportation include a night stay at the inconnue lodge (http://www.inconnulodge.com ) on both the outbound and inbound
flight, in the event of bad weather the accommodations at the lodge are
provided by kluane airway and free of charge
There is also a satalite phone on location the the event that we change
plans or in the event of an accident
Finlayson lake is located 3 hours north of watson lake and can be driven on good gravel road by car. the drive from Calgary to Watson lake
is around 1900 km

Other options for transportation are possible to Whitehorse and to
take bus transportation to Finlayson but Calgary seems like a good option
since we could climb in the Bugaboos or the Adamant's for a couple of days before heading north...pls email me for additional info

I've got a trip planned into the Cirque for next summer, PM or e-mail me if you're interested in seeing if we can coordinate our flights to save a few bucks (ie. he flies in with us and out with you, so we can split the cost of the shuttle). It may be worth a look, anyway. Cheers.

Hi,

I talked with the guy at Kluane; they used to try and coordinate bookings but I guess it was a big hassle so they don't do this so much anymore. We're booked in from July 16 to 23, 2005, woohoo! It was $2,800CDN for the 4 of us on the Beaver. Main objective is LFT but would like to explore a few other things while we're there, hopefully we get a window.

Good luck on your trip.
