Hola,

Aside for scrubbing with a rope brush and water, are there any other tricks to wash a rope? I've heard rumers of an all mighty rope soap, but so far its still a rumor... Help me out.

laudromat front loading washer that does NOT have a center mixer stick thingy, warm water, NO SOAP, hang to dry

what about cleaning a "dry" rope? (Eldrid live wire)

same method. no detergents, warm water, washing mashine that does not have center drum/mixer. I would not recommend washing more than once a year though unless it's really bad. Wetting and drying seems to make ropes stiff.

You can use lite detergent like woolite. I find the most improtant thing is the dry process, make sure you dry it in a place where air will circulate and not get direct sunlight. Stuffing a damp/wet rope back in your rope bag is not good either.

the detergent you use for your baby's clothes would be fine... the Baby Ivory stuff... it is really mild.

...how to put the rope in the washer...

Do you just throw your rope in or do you have to 'braid' it or somthing funky?

Ropes never go in a washing machine that is top loading. Only use the front loading (no agitator). I am partial to hand washing in a tub.

Yeah.....definatly make sure you braid it Andrew..... and it is equally important to tie one figure 8 on each end and then secure them with a prussik !! should take you too long !! I would just use the big long table that the really good laundry mats have and start braiding it there....That will be faster!! :roll:

Hey, not funny.

I read somthing a few years ago that your supposed to braid it... maybe that's the wrong word.

I figured it would go all twisty in the washer and create impossible knots.

Someone with a serious answer?

the rope would be in an impossible mess if it was washed in a washer with a center drum... but if you wash it in a front load washer with no middle part (Flake it in neatly) then it comes out in no bigger mess than what can be created at the crag!

If the washer has a middle part it just comes out wrapped all around that.

Just go ice climbing on a warm day and make sure to trail your rope as you walk out. Keep it out of the mud holes and stick to snow. Works every spring for me.

just throw it in. You'll get tons of nots but shouldn't have any twisting. It's a pain to undo but your rope will be squeeky clean.

Andrew the braidingh was a tip in R&I a few years back. If you have a top loading agitator type washer but the rope in a pillow case, knot it and throw it in

No you don't have to braid it thats the reason behind using a washer WITHOUT an agitator....
