I know there was a thread earlier this year about anchors. Don't want to rehash it but here's an excellent article about it that sums it up very well with unbiased positives and negatives of various options.

I'd rather see locking biners in all of the pictures and alpine butterflies instead of figure 8s in the direct tie in set up.

Instructional guidance should always err on ther side of caution when said guidance is potentially being exposed to the inexperienced.
