Climbing near La Have

Postby DeeDub » Wed Jul 27, 2011 7:24 pm

Hi All,

I'm staying near La Have for the next week or so and I'm looking for some climbing action. Any hints on places to boulder or is anyone one around to go climbing?
I've only got shoes with me but I'll be happy to climb in a harness made from a sling. Needs must. I've got access to a car so let me know.

Not a lot of good rock close by. it's mostly slate, if you hike to gaff point @ the end of hirtles beach there is a place called sandy cove. There is a small sea cave there that might boast a couple bouldering lines. The hike alone is worth the trip.

Also, try the shoreline at rose bay I think it's called devils head (south of the ovens), we used to camp there a lot (before my climbing days) and I remember seeing some potential in the area, ask the locals how to get there, it's close to Kingsburg.

I'd suggest surfing at Cherry hill beach, and Snorkeling at Feltzen South while you down there.

Ask the Folks at the Lahave bakery for directions.

If you got a full day to do some climbing though, your only about an hour and a half from most of the bouldering in the province (the southern shore near Peggy's Cove, and west pennant.)
You'll find a bunch of places and people to climb with if your willing/able to venture that far during your stay...

Gaff Point (Graff? I forget) is an amazing place. When I went we were lucky enough not to really know how to get there, and ended up going to the other end where there is no trail, just a scramble along the base and then some pretty hairy stuff up top. This access also involved trespassing across a piece of property that turned out to belong to one of the country's best architects, it's like his laboratory. This was a strange way to meet one of my heroes, though he was really cool about it and showed us where to wade across a lagoon to get to the rocks.
The rock is gorgeous from a geological if not a climbing perspective - pics if ayone is interested here (though I notice most of these are of nearby buildings!): http://lubke.net/stories/graff-point/

If you can get to Blue Rocks, on the other side of Lunenburg there's some nice looking, very compact and solid slate that looks like it'd be fun. Specifically here (a big ripple-y face, with a half built boat nearby) - just follow the road to 'Stonehurst East' and you'll pass right by:

Yeah, the LaHave bakery is great.
