NS Ice Climbing Info?

Postby Matt Peck » Sun Dec 21, 2008 11:19 pm

Hey all, Im going to be spending a fair bit of time in Hali over the holidays, and my girlfriend and I are looking forward to catching some ice climbing while Im down. I don't know the area very well for ice, but I remember going out with the CNS crew on weekends years ago. If anyone can give me some names/locations/places where I can get info for ice that would be awesome. Moderate climbs within an hour and a half of Hali would be great, but I'll take anything I can get. Thanks a lot!

The most local area in the Halifax Metro is the Bedford Quarry which is located off Rocky Lake rd in Bedford, I'm pretty sure it's on PP and would be worthwhile to have someone who knows the place show you around, that's if it's in.

By the way there are now fixed anchors for both ice lines at the quarry, I forgot I put those in last spring. Makes the top rope setup a little safer (We don't have to girth hitch that bush anymore:).

Halls Harbour is also a really great area. It is located on the Fundy coast just past Kentville and is about a hour or so drive from Halifax. Halls generally has good early season ice providing the tides don't eat the bottoms out too quick, Make sure you check tides, Baxters Harbour is sometimes good as well.

Best people to try and contact would be Peter, Jeremy, or Conan, they know most of the spots.

I'm in Oregon shredding massive amounts of POW on Mt.Hood so I don't even know if anything is in. Mmmmmwaahahahaha!

Yeah, there's some pretty stellar paddling out here, check out www, oregonkayaking, net, there's lots of TR's. Right now it's POW Season though, http://www.timberlinelodge.com and http://www.skibowl.com that's where I'll be spending most of the winter, Timberline has a base of 182cm already most of which accumulated this past week, It's been pretty awesome. Might get up to the Rockies for some Ice as well. Looks like things in NB are shaping up!

Hey Matt:

Didn't we climb at Montmorency, Quebec, once upon a time (as in the photo attached)?

I am going to go out on Boxing Day, to see what is going on. Interested?

Home number 453-6610. The forecast looks good.

The freight-train noise to our right scared us stupid, which helped.

I have to work the 29th, I am afraid. If I find ice on my own search, I will post here.

Not many photos, but here is another one. I didn't have a digital camera back then, so I think Cara took these. P.

Spent the day at Baxter's Harbour until the tide forced us to leave. Ben Q, Seb, Roger, and I set up topropes and did a few lines, most of them involving a bit of drytooling.

Refrigerator-sized chunks of the waterfall started breaking off later in the day, but ice conditions had improved from a few days prior. It was about -2C and sunny all day, with mostly nice plastic ice. Ben resisted our best efforts to drown him and managed to climb up and out of the bay before the rising tide would have swept him out to sea. Seb was the only casualty, with a nice gash on his lip from falling ice early in the day.
