Road Trip for Ice?

Who would be in for an overnight road trip, looking for ice further afield, perhaps next weekend?

I suppose it could be done as a very long day trip, but eight hours in the car round trip would be a pain in the gluteus maximus (in my case, literally, perhaps figuratively for you young folk). It would also be nice to get lots of actual time on the ice, which would require at least a 4:00 a.m. start, midnight return, if done in a day. I would vote for an overnight, but let's see what people think.

The ratio of ice leaders to ice followers would also have to be high, e.g., 1:2, to make this work. My rack is sharp from lack of use. How many others are out there?

If this trip happens I would love meet up with you guys at the trail head and join along, I tried to get in to parlee on friday with some people ( none of knowing where we were going) and never found it, I am in freddy and will drive down to meet up, possibly spend the night as well, have a few drinks after the day is done also have a huge heated winter tent sleeps 3-4 very well, a bit heavy but well worth it.......

I'm in for next weekend and I totally agree with a 8ours round trip. I got my lead gear waiting to be use for the first time this year. I don't mind an overnight but It would be better for me to come back at night

we were in to Parlee this weekend and the conditions have improved even more since the last report. See updated ice report today. Parlee is in fine condition given the hot spells we've been getting.

I might be interested, if Saturday, I need to be back by 1830hrs. I have my onw gear, just don't know where to climb.

Moose river tides low at 0500 and 1700hrs on Saturday and Sunday is 0540 and 1750hrs

Halls Habour tides low at 0830 and 2100hrs on Saturday and Sunday is 0920 and 2140hrs

Does anybody know if there is any Ice in halls harbor? Peter what are your plans this weekend?

The weather looks sunny and very cold Saturday, so this is probably the better day.

The tides are high mid-afternoon both days, so not a great deal of time to climb on the coast.

Moose River? I would go with someone who has been in there (I haven't).

Folly River? Smallish and easy angled, river would have to be frozen, but sheltered if there is wind.

I am free, and interested in getting out. I have no conditions info.

Peter, what about that waterfall past Truro you ended last years season with?

There is easy angled, accessible ice at each of Victoria Falls Truro, Drysdale Falls on the way to Tatamagouche, and Folly River, all within about a half hour drive of each other.

None of these are very large or difficult, but they would be fun enough for a day out with a half dozen climbers. We could leave in the morning and do a circuit, and get back to Halifax around 6:00 p.m..

Shall we say meet Saturday morning at Steve-O-Renos on Brunswick Street at 8:00 a.m., depart 8:10 a.m. (sharp!), stop at Tim Horton's Kearney Lake (beside Holiday Inn), depart there at 8:30 a.m. (sharp!)?

If the above plan doesn't appeal to you, come anyway and we can settle on a different location to climb. If I feel inspired today, I will drive down and have a look at Deep Cove, to see if there is any ice there.

Post here if you are interested in getting out, so we know numbers. We will car pool from these two locations. Bring warm clothes and a thermos if you have it.

So how was it guys?

Truro: completely out, shockingly so.

Bailey's Brook: in, but the river and waterfall is still open. There are a couple of ice routes on the west side of the falls, and a brand new Ben Smith special mixed route, straight up the large over-hanging cliff (go figure).

Simon/Conon: I have some North Face boots left over in my car. I wouldn't normally mention it, but they don't fit me. Call me at home 453-6610 to pick up.
