Update on Ice???

Postby Rob L » Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:42 pm

Any updates on ice around the province? I would like to get a few of my students out as I had to cancel their Katahdin trip.

It's going to be 7 degrees... take them rock climbing.
I want to go to hell... there's probably lots of rock to climb there.

Hey Rob,

Parlee was plenty fat last weekend. Did not suffer at all from warm temps, except a bit of surface water. Would be fine now after colder temps and wind. I would say it would still be great, even if it's +7, as it's always about 5 degrees colder in there anyway. Like a big refridgerator.

Anyone ready to join me to Parlee tomorrow?
All my climbing buddies have started rock season and because of a damaged toe I'll have to stick with the stiff boots...give me a call if you wanna join.

cheers

Went to Parlee today. The ice is fat, but quite rotten: one might have to dig for a while to get a good screw. ATKH covered in snow completely. Snow conditions for the top approach were perfect.

Great conditions today! I was there with Greg and we found plenty of ice. We were on Blue Pillar, Sunbake Wall/Three Amigos and Patrick's Choice. Hullholmes is also fat as well as many of the other lines that we didn't touch.
The season is NOT over! :D

But now, only six days later, it might be over...

All the ice that wasn't melted yet this morning has now probably melted, with an exception of Blue Pillar. The stream is now a wild river and the bottom approach is almost as epic as this year's last ice climbing in there :P
We had another great trip, but it was more scary than usual! We had to put the belay station up in the sidewalls to avoid being hit by random icebergs coming down from the backwall... By comparing pictures before and after the climb, some tons of ice has "disappeared" and hiking out involved some iceberg scrambling.

So...have fun next season!
