Boulders found just outside Fredericton

Postby david » Wed Sep 05, 2007 10:14 am

I found a good half a dozen climbable boulders 15 minutes outside Fredericton. The rock is sedimentary and a little rotten, but nothing a lot of brushing cannot fix (I hope). Drive towards Miramichi on highway 8. Go pass Durham bridge and Dunbar brook. The road takes a long left and joins the Nashwaak river. The shoulder becomes pretty wide... park there. The boulders are right across the road, just a couple meters inside the woods. They can be seen from the road if you drive slow. I'm really hoping the rock can be cleaned enough for safe climbing, I'll give it a try in the next couple days. All the fun features are there, flakes, cracks, roofs, aretes.

Hope to see you there

I don't drive slow...and judging by the photos you weren't either :P

I look forward to updates on the size landings and quality? keep up the search!

Sorry about the pics... I thought they were gonna be displayed much smaller, thus making the blur less conspucious.

I went back there last week and cleaned an easy problem. I would say the boulders are between 10 and 20 feet high and 5-15 feet wide (they are more like mini-cliffs than boulders). The rock can be cleaned, but there are some conglomerate patches. The biggest problem is that most landing zones are narrow and steep...

Not as great as I first thought it would be, mostly because of the landing.... too bad
