Best crag to take my girlfriend, a total beginner?

Postby sam » Tue Jun 12, 2012 5:27 pm

I've been to Mt. Douglas and Sunnyside so far, neither of which are particularly dense on 5.0-5.5's. I'm trying to find the best crag with lots of super beginner sport climbing, or a spot where I can top-rope a trad climb by walking to the top of the cliff. I haven't been to Cochrane Lane yet but I've heard it's mostly trad, and I don't know if I can walk up and set an anchor or not.

Keeping in mind she has zero experience with climbing in general does anybody have any recommendations on where to take her climbing?

Hey Sam try the right end of Joe's garage at Cl. It's a way of life is a 5.3 classic and then There is Pizza 5.5 (ok climb) and a few more moderates. It's really easy to set up TR's there.
Not many sport routes in that range in NB. You may have to roadtrip to Rumney or Kamou for those.

There's also bald peak where we do rock school every year. Top rope anchors are easily accessible and all there are about 10 high quality climbs from 5.2 to 5.9. Really great place to take a beginner.

Sam,

I was going to suggest Bald Peak as well. For a day with a 1st time outdoor climber, you won't find a better concentration of accessible, quality, and easy climbs. It's worth a day there.

I'd suggest many people can manage to climb 5.7 on their first day. Some may work on it more than others... but that's the fun part right? Don't get too fixed on 5.0-5.5. If this is the same girl I met ice climbing this year, she'll do fine. If it's not... I guess I just put my keyboard into my mouth.

Thanks to you both! I think we'll go to both Joe's Garage and Bald Peak in the same day, possibly camp overnight. That way she can get the hang of it at Bald Peak on easy stuff, then I can drag her to CL and explore for my curiosity, and try and climb a few classics.

And yes, it is the same girl Chris :P (and just so you know your keyboard-in-mouth comment made me spit Coke all over my computer out of laughter, lol)

cleaned walk the plank again at cedar point cutting pesky cedars climbers right and anchor area. so this place has become a great spot for beginners aswell. lots of fun climbing and everyone i have brought there has absolutely loved it. mary preferred it over a way of life at joes garage.
Grab your gear and head on out!!! "warren miller"
